THE INVESTIGATION OF THE ENGLISH-UKRAINIAN TRANSLATION OF THE MOVIE “TOURIST”

Keywords: audiovisual translation, voice-over, adaptation, replacement, paraphrasing

Abstract

The work concentrates on the study of the English-Ukrainian translation. Based on the film “Tourist” – American romantic thriller director and producer Florian Henkel von Donnersmark, the most famous for his movies “Life of others”. Christopher McQueen and Julian Fellow helped to write the script. The picture became a remake of the French criminal drama Jerome Salle’s “Undvigende” or “Anthony Zimmer”, which came out 5 years earlier. Ukrainian translation was carried out by one of the largest film studios in Ukraine for the post-production and dubbing Le Doyen. Audio-visual translation types include dubbing, voiceover, narration, free commentary, audio description and subtitling. Last type is disclosed in more detail, where their classification is presented. In addition, it is mentioned how difficult a translator’s work is, what tasks he or she faces, and what problems arise during translation. Beside the types of translation, the techniques most commonly used by the translator are also presented for example borrowing, calque, word for word (or, as it is often called, literal) translation, transposition, adaptation, modulation, compensation. For translation analysis, the original script and translation are selected. They are grouped in the following way: paraphrasing, antonymic translation, reverse translation, substitution (replacement), translation of idioms and adaptation. Some examples have more than one translation technique. In the past, word for word translation was often used to give an incorrect understanding of idioms and other stylistic images in the original film, thereby losing context. Today, this way of translation is brought to a minimum. One of the most common techniques translator uses is paraphrasing, which makes the translation more colorful and closer to the audience.
