Abstract

The article deals with the comprehensive study of linguistic status, pragmatic qualities, stylistic features and functioning of English nonce-words in a literary text. The paper reveals the purpose, ways and peculiarities of integration and adaptation of occasionally-coined language units into the system of literary text. The study distinguishes the main functions of nonce-words created on the basis of foreign borrowings and determines their role in the structural and conceptual system of the original text.

A thorough analysis of functional and stylistic nature of the vocabulary under consideration as well as the ways of its identification and adequate interpretation in the text has also been conducted. Special attention has been paid to the main problems and possible ways of nonce-words translation from English into Ukrainian and into Russian. The translation strategies and methods of rendering structural, semantic and pragmatic peculiarities (occasional form and expressive meaning) of occasionally-coined language units in a literary text are explored.
