RESEARCHER’S ACADEMIC CULTURE AND THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE COMMUNICATIVE STRATEGY OF TOLERANCE IN ENGLISH
Abstract
The article deals with the academic culture of a researcher in general and its reflection in academic writing. The researcher’s academic culture is a complex whole which includes models of individual behaviour, a learning culture, academic literacy, integrity, and tolerance formed in the educational environment. In fact, in academic writing it is important to adhere to the values of academic integrity, which include tolerance as a factor of constructive cooperation, the ability to recognize, respect and appreciate diversity in sciences, areas of research interests, scientific views and ideas, research principles and methods. Any discrimination based on gender, ethnicity, nationality, language, political and religious views, social or financial status, as well as on the basis of affiliation with certain scientific schools or institutions is unacceptable. The article outlines the main features of a researcher’s academic culture, describes the essence of the communicative strategy of tolerance in English academic writing, examines techniques as components of tactics implementing the strategy of tolerance in English academic writing and analyses linguistic means of their implementation. The analysis of illustrative material has revealed three communicative tactics implementing the strategy of tolerance in English academic writing: a tactic demonstrating the relativity of the author’s opinion, a tactic of delicacy of expression, and a tactic of cooperation. It has been found that the tactic demonstrating the relativity of the author’s opinion is a downtoner and is actualized by such techniques as: emphasis of the subjectivity of the author’s opinion, assumption, and decasualization of the author’s factor. It has been determined that the tactic of delicacy of expression is actualized by the techniques of softening the wording, limiting the veracity of the assertion by the time frame, and double negation. It has been proved that the tactic of cooperation is actualized by the techniques of involving the reader in the research and anticipating his/her possible reaction. The implementation of the strategy of tolerance in English academic writing directly depends on the tactics chosen by a researcher. Tolerance as a factor of constructive cooperation, the ability to recognize, respect and appreciate the scientific views and ideas of other scientists, the diversity in their research interests, features of life and worldview, etc., represents the academic culture of a researcher.
