PRAGMATIC ATTITUDE TOWARDS АЕSTHETIC EFFECT IN ENGLISH APHORISM
Abstract
The paper deals with the problem of the language implementation of pragmatic attitudes of English aphorism. The problems of pragmatic aspect of English aphorisms have been observed. The paper contains a brief review of the scientific approaches to the conception of pragmatic attitude. The relationship between the concepts «aesthetic function» and «attitude towards aesthetic effect» in the texts of this genre has been revealed. Several interpretations of the concept of pragmatic attitude coexist in linguistic science. The concept of pragmatic attitude is closely linked with the notion of pragmatic function as a focused use of language units aimed to achieve a certain effect on the recipient, which facilitates conventional contact between the author and the recipient through appropriate verbal and non-verbal means, the use of which implements a pragmatic attitude of the author. During the implementation of pragmatic attitude for aesthetic effect in the English aphorism aesthetic function texts of this genre is objectified. The principal role of attitude towards aesthetic effect in the hierarchy of pragmatic attitudes of English aphorism has been demonstrated. Pragmatic attitude towards aesthetic effect is realized in almost every English aphorism due to the fact that aphorisms are expressed in a bright easy to remember form. The importance of this attitude is caused by the constitutional features of texts of this type. This pragmatic attitude is realized through a wide range of stylistic means, in particular, metaphor, simile and syntactic stylistic means. These tools are often combined within one aphorism to enforce the stylistic and pragmatic effect. Special attention is given to metaphors as means of image creation. The language means of the realization of pragmatic attitude towards aesthetic effect in English aphorisms are presented and illustrated by examples.
