Abstract

It should be emphasized that the colour has always been important in human life and has a great influence in all spheres of our life. Every colour has psychological influence on us, therefore it is widely used in commerce and advertising. It has been studied for a long time by different sciences such as linguistics, philosophy, psychology, ethnology, culturology, ethnolinguistics and psychosemantics. Every colour has own meaning and semantics, every nation and nationality has their own interpretation and meaning for the same colour. In this article we study the coloratives in David Mitchell’s novels and its characteristics. We also concentrate our attention on individual coloratives, which the author uses in his texts, we take into consideration their structural characteristics and types, stylistic features and semantic meaning. The special attention we pay to the nominations of colours frequently used by the author in his novels. David Mitchell who received the title of the "Best Young British Writer" always emphasizes in his interviews the fantastic origin of his creativity which is the main reason for his novels’ success. The coloratives occur frequently in his texts and they always have a special function, they are used to attract the reader’s attention and to interest him. When the author uses certain coloratives, he tries to picture some character or some atmosphere as bright and understandable as he can and the way it is in his mind. It is important that there are many original coloratives which help to reveal the features of the author’s style and the author’s purpose.
