Abstract

The article is devoted to revealing specificity of time and space configurations in Modern English industrial novels. The main aim of research is to compare chronotope model of the novel «The Evening News» (1990) written by Arthur Hailey with one of Ian McEwan`s novel «Saturday» (2005).

The dominant component of chronotope in McEwan`s work is time which can be easily indicated with the help of the novel`s title. The first and the final episode here are united not by the protagonist`s mental state inherent to the early morning of Friday and Saturday respectively. On the other hand, despite of the reference to time of the day in the title of Hailey`s novel, the main component of chronotope here is space. What is more, this space includes not only the news department, but also various locations in the USA, Canada and even South America. However, all of the main events in «Saturday» take place in London only. Next, in McEwan`s an actual action does not go beyond the limits of the day, while happenings in «The Evening News» last for 25 days. Moreover, a variety of flashbacks to the prior events in the life of the characters is a significant feature of both novels.

The article under consideration also deals with the analysis of the conformity of time and space configurations in both works to historical truth. In the American novel the action begins in rather abstract big city on a typical September day. On the other hand, the time of the action is more than important in McEwan`s work as the 15th of February, 2003 was the day of the greatest demonstration of Londoners against the US invasion in Iraque. Then, London`s streets, squares and sights in «Saturday» are described realistically and in minor details in contrast to the picture of abstract New York in «The Evening News». An important feature of chronotope of both works is a vast representation of two models, namely «route chronotope» and «street chronotope», which play a leading part in picturing the culminating episodes.

Generally speaking, time and space configurations serve the purpose of creating plot and characters in Modern English industrial novels.
