NOMINATIVE ORGANISATION OF CONPOUND SENTENCE IN THE MODERN GERMAN LANGUAGE (BASED ON MEDIA DISCOURSE)

Keywords: media discourse, complex clause, compound sentence, binome, polynome, conjunction, coordinating conjunction, punctuation marks

Abstract

This article offers a nominative study of the compound sentence in the media discourse in modern German. Important terms of syntax, such as «complex clause», «main clause», «clause», «conjunction» and others are discussed here. The compound sentence is a kind of a complex clause, which consists of at least two main clauses that are connected coordinatively to each other. Such a sentence can have a structure of two kinds – minimal (binome) and can be built by three or more clauses (polynome). The compound sentence is a complex unit, which is built by a junction of one level elements. Such blocks are constructed by conjunction and a punctuation mark (comma, dash, colon, period, the last element is used by parcellation of the sentence). The semantic-syntactic correlation between clauses is clear, when a conjunction is used. The asyndetic conjunction is very popular, such punctuation marks are used for it: comma, semicolon, colon and dash. The basic binome is often changed: complicated or simplified. The most popular way of its complication is the addition of new clauses (expantion). Infinitive and participle constructions, parenthesis are also widely used. If a subordinate clause is added to the sentence, a coordinate-subordinate polynome appears. The structure of the compound sentence can be simplified. A conjunction is often reduced (asyndeton), a part of a sentence can be taken out (ellipsis) or a part of the sentence can build a parcellat (parcellation). Complication and simplification often happen parallel. Expantion and parcellation or asyndeton can be mentioned among popular combinations in the media discourse. In the semantic-syntactic aspect the compound sentence is a macro-situation, which consists of at least two micro-situations connected by a predicateconnector. Semantic-syntactic relationships between them are additive, adversative, disjunctive or implicative.
