Abstract

This article delves into the complex phenomenon of language barriers in international business communication, focusing on the significant role of translators in facilitating effective dialogue between representatives of Chinese and other global business cultures. In the context of growing globalization, the interdependence of national economies, and China’s increasing participation in international trade and investment, the ability to navigate linguistic and cultural differences has become a crucial component of successful cross- border cooperation. Language barriers often go beyond simple lexical or grammatical challenges—they encompass deeper layers of cultural meaning, implicit communication styles, and differing expectations regarding politeness, hierarchy, and decision-making processes. The study emphasizes the dual role of translators not only as linguistic intermediaries but also as cultural brokers who must interpret and adapt messages in a way that preserves both the intended meaning and the communicative intent. Particular attention is given to the unique characteristics of Chinese business communication, such as the preference for indirect speech, high-context messaging, non-verbal cues, and the deeply embedded concepts of «guanxi» (personal networks) and «mianzi» (face or reputation). These elements are often unfamiliar or interpreted differently in Western business environments, which can result in miscommunication, tension, or lost opportunities.Through a combination of theoretical insights and analysis of real-world case studies, the article identifies frequent sources of misunderstanding in Sino-foreign business interactions and highlights the strategies employed by experienced translators to mitigate these risks. These include pragmatic adaptation, cultural substitution, context-sensitive interpretation, and the application of intercultural communication models. The research also discusses the growing need for specialized training of translators who work in international business settings, including the development of both linguistic competence and intercultural sensitivity. The paper concludes that in an increasingly interconnected world, the translator’s role is vital not only in ensuring accurate message transmission but also in building mutual trust, preventing conflicts, and enhancing the overall effectiveness of international business negotiations. The results of the study are of practical value to professional translators, international business practitioners, linguists, and policymakers interested in fostering productive and respectful communication across cultures.
