ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: FEATURES OF TRANSLATION AND USAGE OF TERMINOLOGY IN THE UKRAINIAN EDUCATIONAL ENVIRONMENT

Abstract

The article analyses the features of translation and usage of terminology in academic integrity in the Ukrainian educational environment. The transformation of understanding the concept of “academic integrity” and its fundamental values in Ukraine’s integration into the European educational space is studied. Based on a comparative analysis of international documents (The Bucharest Declaration, publications of the International Center for Academic Integrity) and Ukrainian sources (the Law of Ukraine “On Higher Education”, glossaries and methodological recommendations), the features of translation and adaptation of terminology in the national context are revealed.Ukrainian interpretations of the core values of academic integrity (honesty, trust, justice, respect, responsibility, courage) have ethnocultural specificity and reflect the institutional features of the Ukrainian education system. The main ways of translating terms are determined: lexical equivalents, calque, semantic differentiation, functional equivalence and, in some cases, preservation of the original English term. The evolution of the perception of academic integrity from a moral norm to an educational policy tool for ensuring the quality of education is indicated.Ukrainian educational environment is adapting international standards of academic integrity with the gradual integration of the fundamental five values and the later added sixth value – “courage”. The analysis of terminological variability observed in various Ukrainian sources when translating English- language terms and concepts is paid attention to. The study revealed a tendency to expand the content and scope of application of the principles of academic integrity in the Ukrainian context, which reflects the process of implementing international standards and forming a nationally conditioned understanding of this important component of the educational system. The need for further systematization and standardization of the terminology of academic integrity to ensure the quality of education is substantiated.
