THE ODORATIVE VOCABULARY IN POETRY OF THE SIXTIES

Abstract

The article is devoted to the study of odoratives that function in poetic speech of representatives of Ukrainian the Sixties. The material of study was the vocabulary used to denote the sense of smell, selected from poetic works of outstanding masters of the word, in particular M. Vinhranovs’kyy, I. Drach, L. Kostenko, B. Oliynyk, D. Pavlychko, V. Symonenko, who made a significant contribution to language-making process and development of language system. The lexical-semantic, grammatical and functional analysis of odoratives was carried out. It is noted that the odorative vocabulary in poetic works of the Sixties occupies an insignificant place, but is a fairly effective means of creating poetic images. The largest group of odoratives is verbs, among which lexemes with the meaning ‘to give out, to give off the smell’ and lexemes with the meaning ‘to inhale smells through the nose’. In poetry of the Sixties, odorative adjectives and nouns are actively used, which convey both pleasant and unpleasant feelings. At the same time, isolated cases of use of adverbs to denote smells were found. It is noted that in modern linguistics several approaches to the classification of smells have been distinguished, but the most common among linguists is the classification of L. Stavyts’ka, based on sources of smell. The lexicalsemantic analysis made it possible to single out the following groups of smell vocabulary: smells of flowers, trees, herbs; smells of animals, birds, insects; smells of fruits and vegetables; smells of objective world, civilization; smells of food and drinks; smells of waste, products of decay, burning; human smells; associative odors, among which odors of natural phenomena, odors of abstract categories, and odors of temporal concepts were distinguished. Vocabulary for olfactory sensations in poetry of the Sixties is used to convey real fragrances that exist in nature of the surrounding world. The odoratives reflect the peculiarities of material and spiritual culture of Ukrainian people, their customs and way of life. They are one of the main means of representing author’s language picture of the world.
