Abstract

The article is devoted to studying of occasional quasicomposites in the works of modern science fiction writers T. Pratchett and S. Lukyanenko. Quasicomposites are understood as compound words, which were formed not by condensation of sentences and phrases, but according to the models which have already been existing in thelanguage and speech, by analogy to some special words. The aim of the article was to determine the productive ways of creating occasional lexical units in the works of modern science fiction writers. The chosen goal preconditions performing of the following tasks: 1) specifying the scope of the term “occasionalism”; 2) determination of the constituent parts of the author’s lexical units; 3) analysis of the reasons for the functioning of lexical units with terminological elements of Greek and Latin origin, because they have become productive material for the formation of quasicomposites and have gained the status of international terminological elements. Due to the high frequency of use and functionality, such word-forming constructs acquire the status of affixoids, which are on the way to the transition from free roots to affixes. Such word-forming constructs are productive not only for the creation of terms, but also for the appearance of occasional words, which contribute to the realization of the function of the author’s influence and increase the realism of the worlds describ by science fiction writers. Thus, affixoids of Greek-Latin origin become universal material for occasional word formation, which is confirmed by examples from both English and Russian. Affixoids of Greek- Latin origin can be excellent material for creating occasional quasicomposites to denote scientific terms of alternative realities. Such techniques help the writers to realize the function of the author's influence on the recipient, the use of terminological elements that are common in science and technology transform imaginary worlds to more real and l due to terminology. Besides it, roots of Greek-Latin origin are well understood by native speakers of almost all the modern languages.
