THE CONCEPT OF EVALUATION AND ITS EXPLICATION BY MEANS OF THE LINK VERBS IN THE STRUCTURE OF ENGLISH FICTION DISCOURSE

Abstract

The concept of evaluation is the phenomenon of the various aspects and belongs to the different fields of science. We regard it as a category of evaluation in the structure of English fiction discourse. The category of evaluation is closely connected with the denotative and connotative meanings. The word in the plan of content can be distinguished as positive and negative and in the plan of expression as implicit and explicit. The category of evaluation as the linguo-stylistic concept is defined as appraisal meaning within semantic structure of the word, which realizes the attitude of the language collective to the words correlation with the word conception, or object (good/bad, approve/disapprove). The explication of the category of evaluation is carried out at the lexico-semantic, morphological and the syntactical levels. The article consider the problem of explication the category of evaluation in the fiction discourse by means of the link verbs. Link verbs differ from the other words by their peculiarities. The aim of this article is to determine the pragmatic potential of English link verbs, which realize the category of evaluation from the outlook of their functionally communicative analyses, which define the type of discourse. The link verbs are distinguished by their function since they are the part of the compound nominal predicate (the nominal part of the predicative). The essence of the predicative is in the definition and evaluation of the statistic property and dynamic development of the objects of reality and their relations. The nucleus of the predicate lexis consists of the verbs. The main types of the meanings of the features and some types of the sentences are closely connected with their semantic classes. The main formal characteristic of the link verbs, which is attached to its name is defined the principal function to ensure lexical meanings of expression the logical connection in the sentence and in a certain context realize the evaluation. Link verbs can be divided into three microfields: 1) link verbs express the existence of a certain quality or state. The nucleus of this microfield is the verb “to be”, 2) the verb “to keep” is the nucleus of the microfield of the verbs that define the maintenance or continuation of the state, 3) the verb “to become” is a nucleus of the verbs that demonstrate the change of the state or quality.
