Abstract

The article analyzes the causes and consequences of Spanish-English language contacts, interprets the concept of Spanglish and analyzes the most popular thematic areas of its usage in modern Spanish. In the article the author focuses on a number of recent researches of scientists concerning Spanglish as a phenomenon of mass penetration of the English language into the speech of Spanish-speaking immigrants in the USA as well as reveals the main features of this phenomenon against the background of anglicisms in the English language.

The USA is one of the most diverse countries in terms of ethnic, racial and linguistic issues. Intensive language contacts in the country contributed to the emergence of such a unique lingvocultural phenomenon as Spanglish. Spanglish in the United States currently lacks official recognition, which explains the absence of general and coauthored works on its history. The complex structure of this phenomenon is conditioned by the fact that Spanglish includes different phenomena of language variability in bilinguals’ speech: code switching, adoption and loanwords.

Analyzing recent publications on this thesis it’s not an easy task to find the exact definition of this phenomenon. In its most basic conception, Spanglish is just what its title indicates: a mixing of Spanish and English. Authors often describe it using terms such as “hybrid”, “fusion”, “third language”, “code-switching,” and “dialect”. Therefore Spanglish is more than a hybrid language or just the linguistic manifestation of uneducated immigrants who cannot come to terms and grapple the language of the host community, it is an identity and linguistic marker in the communities in which it develops. Further this investigation manifests how Spanglish performs at the semantic, syntactic, and morphological level. Analysis of the data shows that the most visible characteristics of Spanglish are loanwords and code-switching.
