Abstract

The article deals with the problem of expressing the conceptual category of language evaluation. The significance of evaluation as a category is expressed in the fact that it is reflected in various language functions. Evaluation is the opinion of the speaker, his attitude – approval or disapproval, desires, encouragement and so on; one of the main parts of stylistic connotation. In this study the category of evaluation is interpreted as speakers’ evaluative attitude to the object of evaluation. In modern linguistics the following types of evaluation are distinguished: positive – negative – neutral. In modern linguistics there are many classifications of the category of evaluation. The study is based on the classification of partially-valued words by A.Papina, which, expanding and specifying the classification of N.Arutyunova, defines emotional, aesthetic, ethical, sensory (visual and auditory), quantitative, rational, logical evaluation meanings. According to the organoleptic perception of environment sensory vocabulary is classified into visual, audial, odourative, gustatory, tactile and subgroups, whose semantic dominants also are determined. Particular attention is given to the range of representatives of each of the examined varieties. Sensory meanings of evaluation are human-centered in the natural and social spheres, contribute to its accommodation, achieving its comfort. Usually these meanings (to those who rely on physical experience) follow directly from human senses. The predicates of this group more reflect the tastes of the subject than the object evaluation. The practical value of this scientific research is that the results can be used in teaching and learning practical stylistics, linguostylistics and discoursology.
