A. THE CONCEPT «AUTOMOBILE» IN THE REALITY SPACE OF THE AMERICAN ENGLISH NATIVE SPEAKERS AND ITS REPRESENTATION IN MODERN LEARNER’S EXPLANATORY DICTIONARIES OF ENGLISH (ON THE BASIS OF THE XXI CENTURY PHRASAL INNOVATIONS)
Abstract
The article deals with the ways of actualizing one of the most powerful linguocultural concepts of the modern USA, that is of the concept automobile, which stands out as a constituent of the basic US concept American Dream, by means of the American English phrasal innovations originated at the beginning of the XXI century. Actuality of the research is conditioned by importance of a more profound study of the concept that went through the objective stages of conceptualization and got fixed in the cognitive-communicative space of the American English speakersin the status of the same name linguocultural concept with the help of phrasal innovative language units. Thus the object of the article are modern American English phrasal innovations that represent the concept automobile as one of themost productive providing spheres of new language unitsand reflect a certain part of the American English speakers’ conceptual world picture.
A number of modern learner’s explanatory dictionaries of English is analyzed concerning linguocultural specifics of the dictionaries in question mega-and macrostructures, as wells as entering new phrasal units-Americanisms into dictionary corpora. As the conducted analysis demonstrates, concentration of phrasal neologisms in the latter is quiet low despite the fact that dictionary compilers (or publishing houses) accentuate upon their presence among dictionary entries.
The authors conclude that a number of phrasal units verbalizing the concept automobilehave long become common in modern American English and thus are to be registered in dictionary corpora, especially in those designed for advanced and expert users of English. Conclusion is also made about the fixation relevance of such language units in learner’s explanatory dictionaries registers due to cultural markedness of the concept automobile andlinguocultural potential subsistent in such phrasal innovations as language means in common use which actualize and verbalize its basic constituents. The authors suggest designing new learner’s explanatory dictionary types capable of a credible and unbiased representation of a certain American English conceptual world picture part with the help of innovative phrasal language units.
