VERBAL MEANS OF THE MYTHOLOGICAL SPACE REPRESENTATION IN THE POETRY OF E. A. POE
Abstract
The article focuses on verbal means of the mythological space representation in the poetry of a well-known American romancist – E. A. Poe (case study "The Raven", "Lenore", "The Sleeper", "Eldorado", "The Lake", "A Dream Within A Dream "," Eulalie "). It deals with the linguistic study of chronotop in general and the mythological time and space in particular. The phenomenon of mithospace is described. The results of the analysis prove that the actualization of the mythological space in the poetry of E. A. Poe is carried out by various lexical means (mythology, theonimes, mythological and religious toponyms, the memorable toponym - Eldorado). Thus the topos of ancient mythology (the underground kingdom - Aid) and axes of the Christian system of the world (Paradise, Heaven, etc.) are revealed.
The author uses these lexical means to create original tropes (periphrasis, metaphors, similes, etc.). The importance of figurative repetitions is emphasized. The associative rows connected with the concepts "LIFE - DEATH" are formed by binary antinomies "UP - DOWN", "LIGHT - DARKNESS". Their function is determined by the romanticism idea of organic unity of real and unreal worlds, existence and non-existence, which reflect the peculiarities of the mythological worldview. Verbal modification of the mythological space in E. A. Poe poetry is predetermined by the tendency of romanticism to remithologization. Ancient and present make a continuum in which the lyrical hero of American romance tries to communicate with Eternity in various times and spaces.
