SEMANTICS AND ORTHOGRAPHY OF MINIMAL STABLE EXPRESSIONS IN B. GRINCHENKO’S «DICTIONARY OF THE UKRAINIAN LANGUAGE»
Abstract
The article is focused on the role of a monument of Ukrainian lexicography of the late 19th – early 20th centuries – Boris Hrinchenko’s «Dictionary of the Ukrainian Language» – as an important source for studying the lexical and phraseological structure of the Ukrainian literary and living folk language of past centuries, in particular phraseological units of various semantics, structure, and genres that are still used by modern speakers. It is emphasised that the work has the characteristics of a phraseological type of linguistic dictionary. More than 500 stable expressions of minimal structure (1–2 function words and one full-meaning word), which are included in phraseology on the basis of its broad understanding, became the subject of analysis, that have a holistic meaning, a stable, traditionally reproducible composition of components that have lost their lexical independence. Particular attention is paid to phrases that are absent in modern phraseological dictionaries, the ways in which they arose and are used. The peculiarities of the location of holistic phrases in dictionary entries for registered words are revealed. Thematic groups of these units are identified and characterised, representing economic activity, traditions and customs, everyday life, construction, and the military sphere, preserving the unique linguistic and cultural heritage of Ukrainians and reflecting various aspects of folk life. As a result of the analysis of the factual material, the peculiarities of the component composition of stable expressions have been established – the presence of archaisms and dialect words. The ability of stable expressions of minimal structure to vary and be synonymous at the level of internal connections has been demonstrated. The orthography of the studied units in the monument and modern dictionaries has been compared.
