Abstract

The article is devoted to a comprehensive study of the linguistic features of English news discourse as one of the leading types of contemporary media discourse in the context of globalization and the digitalization of the information space. The aim of the article is to identify the specific features of the lexical, syntactic, and pragmatic organization of English-language news materials, as well as to determine the role of linguistic means in the realization of the informative, interpretative, and persuasive functions of news reports. The research material comprises English news texts published on the leading international online platforms BBC News and CNN International; the corpus includes 100 news items of different thematic orientations, in particular from the sections on politics, international relations, society, economics, and science. It has been established that the lexical level of news texts is characterized by the active use of socio-political and socio-economic terminology, formulaic language units, and lexemes with implicit evaluative semantics, which ensure both precision of presentation and the formation of an interpretative framework for the perception of events. It has been found that the syntactic organization of news materials is marked by the predominance of standardized patterns, passive and impersonal constructions, as well as quotation structures aimed at objectivizing information and minimizing the author’s presence. The pragmatic analysis has shown that linguistic influence in news discourse is realized mainly implicitly, through the compositional organization of the text, the hierarchical structuring of information, and the use of attributive constructions and references to authoritative sources. The obtained results provide grounds for considering English news discourse as a standardized yet dynamic linguistic system in which terminological precision, syntactic economy, and pragmatic orientation are combined, which determines the prospects for further research within media linguistics and discourse studies.
