Abstract

The article focuses on a contrastive study of the military vocabulary in Ukrainian and English phraseological units. The aim of the research is to identify common and distinctive features of the military vocabulary in the phraseological systems of the languages under study. The relevance of the research is determined by the insufficient study of the phraseology with military components in the contrastive aspect and its theoretical and practical significance for phraseology, cognitive and contrastive linguistics, translation studies, intercultural communication, and foreign language teaching at higher military educational institutions. Through continuous sampling from printed and electronic sources, a corpus of 224 Ukrainian and 302 English phraseological units with military semantic components was compiled. Component analysis revealed 74 military lexemes in Ukrainian phraseological units and 115 lexemes in English ones. In both languages, the majority of phraseological units contain one military component, while phraseological units with three components were found exclusively in English. A thematic classification of the extracted military vocabulary was developed, encompassing three thematic groups: “Material and Technical Component of the Armed Forces”, “Military Strategy and Tactics”, and “Organization of the Armed Forces”. Each thematic group is structured into thematic subgroups according to the semantic characteristics of the identified components. The contrastive analysis revealed both similarities and significant quantitative and qualitative differences in military vocabulary within the phraseological systems of the languages studied. Higher phraseological productivity of military vocabulary was identified in English. In Ukrainian phraseology, the thematic group “Material and Technical Component of the Armed Forces” dominates quantitatively, while in English “Military Strategy and Tactics” does. Both languages demonstrate high productivity of cold weapon nominations and ammunition, flag nominations, and lexemes denoting weapon use and combat actions. However, the prevalence of cold weapon nominations in Ukrainian phraseology and firearms nominations in English was established. The research results can be applied in lexicographic practice, foreign language teaching, translation activities, and further contrastive studies of phraseology.
